Sweet Sam Gets Sweet Potatoes!

I have been so excited to start Sam on solids ever since I got the handy, dandy Baby Breza for Christmas.  I could not wait to start using it and coming up with all kind of yummy creations.  I have also been referencing this cook book for yummy recipes and recommendations on which foods are a good introduction to solids.BabYbreeza

We decided to start Sam on solids when he was 6 months old.  These organizations all recommended that babies are exclusively breastfed/formula fed for the first 6 months:

  • American Academy of Pediatrics
  • American Academy of Family Physicians
  • World Health Organization

Years ago it was recommended to start babies on solids at just a few weeks to “help them sleep better”, we now know that there is no link between feeding a baby cereal in those early weeks and the amount they sleep.  There are no benefits, only risks to starting a baby on solids before they are biologically ready.IMG_7241

Benefits of waiting until 6 months to start solids:

  • Decreased risk of food allergies
  • Less incidence of gastroenteritis, diabetes, obesity and ear infections
  • Baby’s digestive system has time to mature
  • Much less likely to choke


Around 5 1/2 months Sam started watching us intently as we ate.  He studied the entire process by following our forks as they went from our plates to our mouth.  He became very interested in the entire process.  He was also able to sit up on his own at 6 months old, which research has shown is a good sign of their readiness for solids.IMG_7249

I decided not to start Sam on grains initially.  I know the majority of parents will start out with cereal first but I wanted to give Sam’s digestive tract more time to mature before introducing grains.  Some of the key enzymes that aid in the digestion of more complicated carbohydrates aren’t produced until 6-9 months of age.  So I decided to start with sweet potatoes!

Sam knew something was up the minute we put him in his high chair.  He kept looking around and would get really excited, let out a squeal and wave his hands in the air.  Of course we had the camcorder and camera ready.  Everyone had their places before the first bite.

Sam rolled the sweet potatoes around in his mouth and after a couple of seconds, made a face of disgust!  It was as though I gave him a lemon to suck on!  Hilarious.  The next bite, he did a bit better.  Still made a face of disgust but by the third bite, he was in love with this new taste!IMG_7259

It’s recommended to start a new food every 3 days.  This allows time to see if there is an allergy associated with this particular food.  Vegetables that we’ve tried so far are sweet potatoes, zucchini, asparagus, avocado and peas.  However, the only success being sweet potatoes.  Fruits that we’ve tried are bananas, pears, apples, plums, and blueberries.  All have been a success, which I suspected they would be. An important thing to note is that breast milk is still his main source of nutrition and will be for the first year.  Food before his first birthday is truly just for fun and to introduce the world of solids to him.

We introduced Sam to barley cereal on Saturday.  He’s 7 months old now! {How is that possible?!}  I chose barley instead of rice because of the recent reports of large amounts of arsenic found in rice.  I tried making homemade barley cereal, but it wasn’t a success.  A friend of mine gave me an organic barley cereal, fortified with iron, to try and Sam loved it.  It was smooth and delicious.  I chose barley because it is easily digestable and contains 3.55g of protein per serving. 

Can’t wait to try more foods and come up with yummy creations.  I’m thinking around 8-9 months that I will start using herbs and spices in his food to make them a bit more interesting.  Watch out Sammy!  Momma’s gonna make you a foodie 🙂
