Happy Birthday Sam!

{Clearly this post is 5 months behind but this is where the saying, “Better late than never” comes in J}

I must confess something. I am a Pinterestaholic. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery, right? Turns out I don’t want to recovered though when it comes to Pinterest. Sometimes I wonder how I ever planned a baby shower, party or my wedding without it?! I started a board for Sam’s birthday when he was 4 months old. Pinning here and there, getting some great inspirations. We decided to go with a Sam I Am, Dr. Seuss themed party.  All of the pictures are taken by my sweet friend, April.  Check out her adorable Etsy site, Showers by April!

Let’s start with décor…

Ryan created the most adorable birthday banner for Sam. We included his nicknames, weight, number of teeth, his interests and some of his firsts. I LOVE how it turned out. I also wanted to display how much my sweet Sam has changed over the past year so I hung pictures from throughout the year around the party. It’s so crazy how much they change in that first year. A little snuggly newborn turns into a walking, talking boy so fast! Sam absolutely loves balloons. So I knew that had to be a part of our décor. I lined the walkway leading to the pool with balloons and placed them on tables and throughout the house.011314_1603_HappyBirthd1.jpg

I also created truffula trees from the movie, The Lorax. PVC pipes, wrapped with black streamers and tissue paper poof on top. All together costs $15. Holla!011314_1603_HappyBirthd2.jpg

Ryan created these adorable food place cards. I went really simple with the snacks. I’ve learned from all of the baby showers and parties I’ve hosted that simple is best. Doesn’t mean it has to be lacking detail but the more you can actual interact with your guests the better. So, most of the food was prepared the night before. The only thing I had to worry about the day of were the “Go, hot dog, Go!” aka pigs in a blanket.

Sam’s cake is definitely what I spent the most time and the most money on. This is pretty much where my budget went. I really wanted the cake to be a focal point as that is what everyone looks forward to. The great smash that accompanies a first birthday. It’s almost a rite of passage. The fabulous Julie of, Farmhouse Sweets, created this masterpiece. It was just perfect. Julie and I emailed back and forth on design and she nailed it. Plus, the cake was out of this world delicious. The top layer was spice, middle was vanilla and the bottom was chocolate.

We had lots of family and friends over, some even made the 2 hour drive from Columbus. Sam was so excited to see his best friend, Adeline! She is just the sweetest little thing!

It was a beautiful, hot, August day. I still can’t believe how fast time is flying by. I know everyone says it but it truly does go by in the blink of an eye.
